Most interesting/quirky ports? Official or not.

Recommended Posts

So, I thought I was really interested in any kind of Doom port to consoles, but after searching a little bit I thought that some ports have nothing really interesting on them, it's just Doom the same way it is on PC or downgraded(not considering the differences on the Midway ports or the 3DO soundtrack). But there are some ports that are really different from any other port because the hardware itself is different from anything else. The most interesting ones out of all of the official ports probably are the GBA versions, mostly because of the way multiplayer works on the system. And the only two unofficial ports that really catch my attention are DsDoom and 32X Resurrection, because both use features from each console that aren't so easily replicated on other platforms.

So, my question is, are there any console ports that have this same kind of tie to the hardware they are on?

There is the homebrew Wii port of Doom which I believe has the option to use the Wii remote pointer to turn/look.

I only found one video of a person playing it with the pointer, it looks like it controls well, just not on the level of games like RE4 on Wii, but it makes me think why Nintendo has been focusing on gyroscope tech instead of IR lights, if Nintendo Switch ports had that kind of controls it would be worth owning even for people that have the same game on other platforms, the only thing that would need to happen would be Nintendo making a plastic grip with two mirrors inside of it like that 3DS second analog stick, and of course, the port developers would need to actually implement it in the games.

Crispy Doom is on Wii U, as Crispy Doom U.

It is rather neat, to say the least.

And about this one I couldn't find anything other than one video and the Github page.

User refers to the original Wii-Doom, but there is also an updated Wii-Doom that is far superior (Also Heretic/Hexen).

I really like that one, and it's cool that it's based on Chocolate Doom, but it only supports the classic controller. Whereas this fork of the original Wiidoom supports gamecube controllers, along with basically any form of wii input iirc. Not a big fan of the soundfont it comes with, but downsampling the SC-55 oggs to 32khz and putting them into archive wads works great.

Only thing I wish either of them had is splitscreen deathmatch support, as a neat little halftime show to run on stream at my local melee tournaments. :)
